The cross-border war between India and Pakistan that has been raging since May 7, 2025, has certainly affected the world, but it has not seriously affected ASEAN and Cambodia at large.
The Indian government’s decision to launch an air strike using missiles and fighter jets as well as large-scale missiles on Pakistani territory is something that no one would have imagined. But it has already happened. So far, the effects of this conflict do not seem to have any additional impact on the existing problems facing the world.
To this day, this issue is still hotly debated, and major powers in the world, including the United States, Russia, France, China, the European Union, etc., are still monitoring the development of this war. However, in terms of the impact of this war, it does not seem to be big for the world, especially ASEAN and Cambodia.
Of course, India and Pakistan are both nuclear-armed nations. So it is very sensitive that the two countries are at war with each other. But in terms of the overall economic impact, it does not seem to be big. After India launched a military strike on Pakistani territory, ASEAN, including Cambodia, appeared to remain silent on the issue, even though many ASEAN countries have diplomatic relations and cooperation with both countries.
The reaction of ASEAN and Cambodia is different from what happened between the two countries in 2019, when both ASEAN and Cambodia issued joint statements. According to reports, after India used missiles, fighter jets and artillery on Pakistan, at least 36 people were killed, 26 in Pakistan and 10 in Indian-administered Kashmir. After the attack, Pakistan defended itself and claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets.
After India launched the attack, many countries reacted, including China, France, Iran, Israel, Japan, Qatar, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Nations, the United Kingdom, and the United States, expressing their respective diplomatic positions, but ASEAN and Cambodia did not seem to react.
So far, ASEAN has had good relations with India, with India being an important dialogue partner for ASEAN. The world’s most populous country has been connected and engaged with ASEAN since 1992, while Pakistan has only recently sought to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN.
As for Cambodia, between India and Pakistan, Cambodia has diplomatic relations with each other. It’s just that India has been a friend of Cambodia for a long time and has long cultural and civilizational roots. But Pakistan, despite its close ties with Cambodia, is also a cooperative partner of Cambodia, and despite this, Pakistan is still a friend of Cambodia.
On the economic and trade front, so far there seems to be no report on the impact on the global economy and trade due to the Indian and Pakistani attacks.
The price of gold, fuel, trade conditions, and the stock market also seem to have no analysts. Talking about the relationship of this war is still because it broke out only in the border area of India and Pakistan. So for Cambodia it is even less. In terms of economy and trade, Cambodia and India, as well as Cambodia and Pakistan, there is nothing big. Cambodia and India currently have direct flights to India, but this conflict area is far from the destination of connecting Cambodia.
In short, the conflict between India and Pakistan has not yet spread to the level of affecting the world economy and trade. The problem is that the crisis is still near the border, but everything else is the same. On the other hand, this is not the first time that the two countries have fought a cross-border war like this.
