Africa is the largest and second most populous continent in the world after Asia, but because it is far away and Cambodia has little contact, Cambodian traders seem to be less interested in this market.
According to trade statistics that Cambodia achieved in the first half of 2025, Cambodian trade has a total value of 31 billion dollars, with exports of 14.72 billion dollars and imports of approximately 16.28 billion dollars, but there is no record of trade with this continent yet.
So far, Cambodia’s trading partners include countries in ASEAN, in addition to Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and India, while other countries may include Africa.
The total recorded trade volume of other countries is approximately $1.43 billion, of which imports are $879 million and exports are approximately $560 million.
The analyst said that in fact, it is not that Cambodia does not have trade relations with the continent, but that the statistics are small and can be recorded in the part of the trade that is stated differently.
The same analyst said that in general, Africa is a big market, but in general, it is far from Cambodia, about 10,000 kilometers away. Trade requires expensive transportation and takes a long time. The products produced by Africa and Cambodia can be very similar, which makes it difficult for Cambodian and African traders to find profitable opportunities to explore this issue. The analyst added that opportunities are always there if there is a detailed study because some countries in Africa are also agricultural countries. But they don’t produce rice, they produce something else, which is an opportunity while we have rice.
In fact, so far, Africa has a total land area of 30.3 million square kilometers and a total population of approximately 1.4 billion people, but despite this, African citizens as a whole have an average income of only about $1,900 per year per person.
In total, the distance from Cambodia to Africa and the similarity of production is an obstacle to expanding trade potential between Cambodia and Africa. But big traders can study potential markets.
So far, Africa has about 54 countries. So if we can strengthen the relationship, we can try to identify potential markets. For example, study the market in some of the richest countries in Africa, such as South Africa, which has a population of 64 million, and the people in this country have a high income of up to more than $ 6,400 per year.
Algeria has a population of about 47 million, but its citizens have an annual income of almost $6,000 per year, while Morocco, which has a population of 37 million, has an annual income of more than $4,300.
