PHNOM PENH – The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) has issued a weather advisory as Tropical Storm Nuri (T2603) moves across the Western Pacific, indirectly affecting Cambodia through strengthened northeast monsoon activity.
Although the storm is not expected to make landfall in Cambodia, its interaction with regional weather systems is increasing moisture levels over the Mekong River Basin, triggering localized rain and thunderstorms from March 13 to 15.
According to the ministry, several southern and central provinces may experience scattered rain and gusty winds covering approximately 10 % of affected areas.
The storm is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to the lowland plans, specifically affecting Phnom Penh, Pursat, Takeo, Prey Veng, and Kandal. Similar weather is hitting highland areas like Kampong Speu and Pailin, while the coastal regions will see cloudier skies and a chance of light rain.
Northern and northeastern provinces including Siem Reap, Banteay Meanchey, and Preah Vihear are currently forecast to remain dry.
Authorities are advising residents and travelers to remain alert, particularly those commuting by road or operating small vessels. While widespread flooding is not anticipated, localized flash floods and sudden wind gusts may occur in isolated areas.
The ministry noted that the storm’s intensity and trajectory may change within the next 24 to 48 hours. The public is encouraged to monitor official updates from the MOWRAM for the latest information.
