Statistics received from the Ministry of Commerce show that in the first half of this year, imports of three major products were the backbone of the country’s agricultural production growth.
The same source said that from January to June, Cambodia imported special agricultural machinery, namely tractors and bulldozers, with a total value of $69 million, an increase of 3.66 percent compared to the same period in 2024.
Meanwhile, statistics also show that imports of agricultural fertilizers have increased the most. During the same period, Cambodia imported agricultural fertilizers worth nearly $205 million, an increase of 22.54 percent, while imports of agricultural chemicals and herbicides were also unusually high.
During the same period, imports of pesticides and herbicides were worth nearly $110 million, an increase of about 1.21 percent.
Analysts said that when Cambodia imported goods such as tractors, motorized tractors, fertilizers, Pesticides, like herbicides, have such an increase, reflecting that Cambodia’s agricultural sector will grow further for 2025 and the upcoming 2026 harvest season.
The same expert said that the increase in agricultural machinery imports is in line with what the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has previously mentioned about the modernization of Cambodian agriculture and the liberation from the traditional agricultural system that uses the power of livestock such as cows and buffaloes to use machinery instead.
The import of modern equipment and necessary products is a step towards transforming Cambodia’s traditional agriculture into a more productive and competitive agricultural sector, and it will also help diversify crops and increase the production cycle.
The same expert said that mechanized agriculture helps increase the efficiency of Cambodian agriculture by allowing farmers to cultivate large areas faster and use less labor, while increased imports of fertilizers and pesticides, as well as herbicides, can help increase crop yields, reduce losses and improve quality. But we must also consider the consequences.
He encouraged farmers to be careful about using fertilizers and chemicals because it can cause our agricultural products to have residues of agricultural chemicals, which the international market is concerned about, affecting our efforts.
At the same time, he also mentioned the increase in the cost of agricultural products, which makes our products expensive and difficult to compete with products from other countries.
